Abstract

The self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence of Na 1- x K x I and K 1- x Rb x I mixed crystals has been investigated over the whole composition range with use of a D 2 lamp and of synchrotron radiation. The change in effective value of S/ D (Rabin-Klick parameter) caused by doping different alkali metal ions allows us to study the relaxed configuration of the STE states. On the basis of the interrelation between the emission bands, it is pointed out that three kinds of stable configurations, i.e. on-center, weak off-center and strong off-center, exist for the lowest triplet STE states in alkali iodides.
