Abstract

Spectra, polarizations and decay times of luminescence in well refined tetracene crystals with monomeric structure have been measured over a wide temperature range. These data have led to the following conclusions: (1) the luminescence consists of free exciton luminescence and self-trapped exciton luminescence, (2) free excitons and self-trapped excitons are in thermal equilibrium, (3) the self-trapped exciton state is of one-center type and (4) the self-trap depth for the excitons is about 60 cm -1 .
