Abstract

We study the influence of hydrogen diffusion on the Raman spectra of highly protonated LiNbO3 waveguides. Vibrations in the lowest frequency range (30–150 cm-1) in various scattering configurations are reported. On the basis of the detected mixing of A1(zz) and E(zx) types of phonons, we show that the formation of off-axis HxLi1-xNbO3 waveguide layers on X-cut LiNbO3 substrates is confirmed by Raman-scattering measurements. An attempt to clarify the structural changes which take place during the proton-exchange process has been made.
