Abstract

A relativistic spin-dependent amplitude for elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons by hydrogen atoms and hydrogen-like ions is derived in the straight-line Glauber approximation, without exchange terms. Relativistic effects within the target have not been included. The results are given in closed form in terms of hypergeometric functions. Numerical results for the excitation to the n = 2 levels are compared with existing experimental data.
