Abstract

We review the information that may be obtained from the analysis of the spin dependence of the scattering of electrons from the surface of magnetic materials. Two sources of spin dependencies are explored: those introduced by the spin orbit effect, and by the exchange coupling between the beam electron spin, and the unpaired spins in the substrate. Each of these can be used to obtain information about the near surface environment of magnetic materials, through the elastic scattering of electrons from the material. We also describe recent theoretical analyses of the inelastic scattering of electrons by Stoner excitations and spin waves in ferromagnets. The implications of these results are explored.
