Abstract

The well-known expression for the ratio of liquid-gas intensities of absorption bands is derived from the point of view of dispersion theory which shows clearly several assumptions implicit in the expression, the most important being the restriction to weak bands. The manner in which liquid and gas oscillator strengths can be determined from liquid dispersion data is discussed and the infrared dispersion data of CS2 is analyzed in this way.
