Some workers do not appear to consider as a fracture but rather only a tendency to split along more or less parallel surfaces owing to mineral or other component alignments. Stokes and Varnes (1955, p. 25) suggest that the term cleavage should not be applied to the actual fracturing [italics added] of rocks, which is jointing.
