Abstract
During moderately disturbed periods, the AE and Dst indices have a simple linear relationship. However, it is shown that their relationship is considerably different during geomagnetic storms. As the |Dst| index grows above 50γ, the AE index levels off and tends to decrease. This finding may have interesting implications in understanding the formation of the ring current belt.
