Abstract

The relationships between the structure of N 1- or N 4-subtituted 1,2,4-triazoles and their thin-layer chromatographic behaviour on silica gel were studied. Linear correlations were obtained between the retention parameter, R M ,and the lagarithm of the molar fraction of a strong solvent in eight binary solvent systems for five pairs of positional isomers. The slopes depend on the position and the polarity of the substituent. A relationship was established between the retention order and the adsorption mechanisms of the molecules and the basicities of the triazole nuclei. the study of the selectivity parameter, Δ R M , allows elution systems capable of purifying a derivative or its isomer to be proposed.
