Abstract

The resistance of ceramics to thermal shock can be characterized using either a parameter of their resistance to fracture R or the critical temperature difference ΔTc=ΔTc(Bi). It is demonstrated that a correlation exists between the values ofR and ΔTc. Experiments were performed on alumina-based ceramic materials (99.8 and 86% Al2O3), glass-bonded mullite, and a borosilicate glass. Three equations were used to describe the dependence of the critical temperature difference on the Biot number. A relationship between the critical temperature difference and the parameterR was considered and the best correlation between the values ofR and ΔTc was established using statistical analysis techniques. It is shown that the correlation can be described satisfactorily in terms of a linear dependence.
