Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and blood glucose fluctuation in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients(T2DM) with normal cholesterol by continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS).Methods One hundred and twenty-five T2DM patients with normal cholesterol were divided into normal intima group (n =46),thick intima group (n =39) and plaque group (n =40) according to the characteristic of carotids' hypersound picture.CGMS was monitored for 72 hours. The mean fasting blood glucose (MFBG),mean post blood glucose (MPBG),mean blood glucose(MBG),standard deviation of blood glucose(SDBG),mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE),largest amplitude of glycemic excursion (LAGE) and percentage of time below 3.9 mmol/L were calculated and analyzed the relevant data Comparativly. Results MFBG,MBG showed no significant difference among the three groups.MAGE,SDBG,LAGE,MPBG and percentage of time below 3.9 mmol/L in thick intima group and plaque group were all significantly higher than those in normal intima group (P < 0.05).In the patients with plaque versus with thick intima,MAGE,SDBG,LAGE,MPBG were significantly higher as well (P < 0.05).But the percentage of time below 3.9 mmol/L was no significant difference between thick intima group and plaque group. Conclusions There is a correlation between the blood glucose fluctuation and carotid atherosclerosis in T2DM patients with normal cholesterol.Blood glucose fluctuation may promote the occurrence and development of carotid atherosclerosis.
