Abstract
Acute stretch of the cardiac atria is known to elicit a variety of responses, including diuresis and natriuresis, 1 inhibition of renin secretion 2 and vasopressin, 3 and an increase in atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion. 4 These changes undoubtedly occur in experimental animals exposed to acute changes in atrial pressure, but their relevance to clinical disorders, particularly those associated with chronic atrial enlargement, is unknown. We assessed the relation between left atrial (LA) diameter using M-mode echocardiography and plasma immunoreactive ANP, plasma renin activity (PRA) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) in 30 consecutive patients.
