Abstract
This study it had as objective the characterization of the mangrove ecosystem occupation and their relation to the prevalent diseases in the inhabitants registered at the Family Medical Unit (FMU) in Joinville City, Santa Catarina State. This area is located within the Atlantic Forest biome. It is one of the latest mangrove continuous areas extant in the South’ country. The data regarding to the anthropic activities, as well as the health data of the inhabitants were obtained through the analyses of these families records at the FMU. The micro areas are classified in 1- combined; 3 and 5- rural; 4- urban; 6- irregular occupation. The five micro areas hold the same genders’ proportion, as well as the same frequency level of diseases and symptoms which appears. The main reasons which have made local dwellers seek medical assistance at the FMU: first concerning to the respiratory system; second, the digestive system; the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDS); the reproductive system and the bone-muscle system. Regarding to the diseases related to sewage (digestive system and skin), the rural and irregular occupation areas show the highest rates but without statistically significant difference.
