Abstract

This research investigates the effect of grouted threaded rods installed perpendicular to the uniaxial compressive load on the compressive strength of concrete model pillars. The transverse reinforcement of model pillars with threaded rods, simulating triaxial conditions, provides confining pressures on the pillar resulting in an increase in the uniaxial compressive strength. Significant increases in compressive strength were realized in ductile pillars in which the substantial transverse strain of the pillar developed high stresses in the confining rods. However, a decrease in compressive strength resulted in high-strength pillars in which strains were not large enough to develop high stresses in the rods.
