Abstract

Conventional ayurvedic herbal formulations exhibited enormous potential effects to ameliorate hypercholesterolemia. Vaisvanara Churnam (VC), a classic conventional ayurvedic formulation useful to correct digestive system disorders. Hypercholesterolemia is induced by oral administration of 1.5% of cholesterol along with cholic acid (0.5%) and treated with VC (450mg/kg) for 60 days in rats. The objective is to decipher the lipid metabolism regulation via reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) and Toll like receptor, (TLR) signalling pathway in high cholesterol diet fed rats. VC for 60 days in cholesterol co-administered rats tapered off the elevated lipid profile, decreased lipogenic enzymes, enhanced RCT and decreased TLR-NFқB expression, maintains the balance of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and boost up the excretion of bile acids. VC thus effectively abolished the established hypercholesterolemia and had a conspicuous protective role against atherogenesis.
