Abstract

Summary Studying tobacco anthers ( Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Samsun) cultured on the media containing 0–30 μ M FeEDTA we have recorded the development of globular embryoids only, while on the media with 40–150 μ M complete plants occured. The threshold concentration of 40 μ M, inducing transformation of the globular embryoids into plants was the same both in light and dark. Darkening of the anthers was directly proportional to FeEDTA concentration of the medium. The effect of FeEDTA was in all cases superior to that of kinetin, both at the levels of anthers and isolated embryoids. Frequency of occurrence of embryogenic anthers on the media without FeEDTA and their colour were not influenced by kinetin. The high kinetin concentration (10 mg per 1 liter medium) induced a secondary multiplication of androgenic plants. The relationship between morphogenetic effects of iron and developmental stages of embryoids, activation of their photosynthetic apparatus and respiration is discussed.
