Abstract
The ventrolateral medulla (VLM), comprising rostral and caudal parts (RVLM and CVLM), is the brain region primarily responsible for regulation of cardiovascular function. The enhanced sympathetic activity is closely associated with many cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and heart failure. The RVLM, which receives inhibitory gamma-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) input from the CVLM, mostly innervates the sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the intermedial lateral column of the spinal cord and regulates cardiovascular homeostasis by modulating sympathetic excitability. Several lines of evidence have shown that aldosterone signaling system in the RVLM plays a role in regulation of cardiovascular function, whereas it remains unknown whether dysfunction of RVLM aldosterone signaling contributes to hypertension. This mini review addresses the functional characteristic of the aldosterone signaling system in the RVLM, focusing on its regulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
