Abstract

Plasmids from two virulent strains of Agrobacterium rhizogenes belonging to biotypes 1 and 2 are compared for DNA homology with the nopaline Ti plasmid from Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 by means of Southern blot hybridizations. We find that both A. rhizogenes plasmids share strong sequence homology with regions of the Ti plasmid that affect oncogenicity of A. tumefaciens C58. The biotype 1 plasmid shows an additional region of homology at approximately the position of the genes responsible for conjugative transfer of pTiC58. Neither A. rhizogenes plasmid shows any detectable homology with the T-DNA of A. tumefaciens C58. Possible analogies between hairy root and crown gall induction are discussed on the basis of the results presented.
