Regional Variations in Bird Skin Preparation Techniques and Parka Designs

Abstract

The objectives of this study were: (a) to identify historical bird skin preparation techniques and parka styles, (b) to identify bird skin clothing-production techniques used by Inuit in the circumpolar region, and (c) to determine factors influencing regional variations in skin preparation and parka designs. Participant observation was used to document skin preparation techniques and garment construction procedures. Attribute analysis of bird skin garments found in museums, archives, and in the field was used to identify regional variations in garment designs. Findings indicated that basic design principles used in caribou skin parkas also were used in bird skin parkas. Regional differences in hem length, hood construction, and sleeve length were identified. Skin preparation techniques were basically the same from one area to the next. Some groups, however, soaked skins in urine, and others decorated the skins with local dyes.
