Abstract AN OLD Chinese proverb states, in effect, that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. It is a thought-provoking bit of philosophy, reminding us of the value of small units in large-scale enterprises. I commend to your attention also a remark made recently during a discussion of a public question in the Nation’s Capital. “All motion is not progress” was the statement made. This observation is especially noteworthy in an age of more and more streamlining for more and more speed. Let us now put the old and the modern philosophy together in relation to the purpose for which we have assembled. In dedicating this Regional Research Poultry Laboratory it is fitting to review briefly the initial steps already taken and note the direction in which they lead. At Ohio State University in April, 1937, several hundred poultrymen, hatcherymen, and leaders of allied poultry interests listened . . .
