Abstract

To understand China's Taiwan policy, one must understand Beijing's current perspective on the global political and economic situation. According to the official Chinese viewpoint, since the end of the Cold War, the world has moved towards multi‐polarity (duojihua) and relations among states have become more relaxed. Whether it reflects reality or not, this belief in multi‐polarity is a prime determinant of China's foreign policy. This essay will explore the conceptual dimensions of China's multi‐polar worldview, and the implications for China's foreign policy in general and its Taiwan policy in particular.
