AbstractThe natural orthogonal component method (NOC's ) and the observational data of 20 geomagnetic observatories in China and 3 geomagnetic observatories in Japan were used to establish the time functions of the natural orthogonal component of geomagnetic field, i.e, the Orthogonal models of secular variation of geomagnetic field over China during 1985–1997. The test calculations of orthogonal components for degree 1–9 and the root mean square (RMS) of geomagnetic field component for 23 observatories were all carried out. As for examples for 1995 epoch, the contour maps of orthogonal model values for kNOC=1–3 were constructed. The results show the contours of secular variation rates of X (north ward), Y (east ward), and Z (vertical down ward) components are very smooth and uniform in distribution and have obvious regional feature .This reflects the secular variation regultaion of main geomagnetic field .In which, the secular variation rates are vary large in some area, and it can reflect local feature of geomagnetic field and the relative geophysics phenomena.
