Abstract

As has been well documented, many woody plants in the Sonoran Desert experience episodic recruitment as a consequence of poor seedling survival (Shreve, 1917; Steenbergh and Lowe, 1977; McAuliffe, 1986; Sherbrooke, 1989). Episodic recruitment can also be a result of infrequent opportunities for germination. Observation of emergence events in nature (Table 1) is a first step toward determining natural germination requirements and estimating the frequency of opportunities for germination.
