Abstract
Three species of moss, Funaria hygrometrica Hedw., Physcomitrium pyriforme (Hedw.) Hampe, and Physcomitrella patens (Hedw.) BSG (Funariaceae) were examined for (a) the presence of a photoreactivating (PR) repair mechanism after ultraviolet (u.v.) irradiation and (b) the time necessary for photoreactivation to occur. No PR of regeneration was detected in either Funaria hygrometrica or Physcomitrium pyriforme; however, Physcomitrella patens did show significantly increased survival when cultures were exposed to visible light after u.v. irradiation. The length of time necessary for repair in visible light depended on the magnitude of initial u.v. exposure.
