Abstract
The School of Education is strongly committed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders education. Many School initiatives have supported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and advanced non-Aboriginal staff and student Indigenous knowledges and cultural competencies: an Indigenous Content in Undergraduate Programs (ICUP) course; programs for special intakes; establishing an Indigenous Education Committee; presentations on Indigenous education; and inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander goals in the School Strategic Plan. These initiatives have neither shifted the School towards improved Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student retention rates, nor made the School the preferred Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander South Australian teacher education provider. In 2015 the School reformed its approach, adopting a whole of school strategic plan with five main aims: (i) to increase the diversity of School’s workforce through the employment, retention and career progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; (ii) to increase the enrolment, participation, retention and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to 2% parity; (iii) to expand Indigenous research across the School and increase the number of Indigenous Higher Degree - Research (HDR) students and researchers, increasing research that is culturally safe, respectful and engages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; (iv) to integrate Indigenous knowledges into the curriculum; and, (v) to increase cultural awareness via staff professional development. This presentation will describe the School’s journey to develop the strategic plan, its key elements and challenges.
