Abstract
This paper aims at listing assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics (VS) that are seen as potential contributions to the teaching and learning process of Brazilian Portuguese. Its objective is to find an interface between VS and the Portuguese as Additional Language (PAL) teaching methodology, in order to find elements that contribute to teacher education and to the elaboration of didactic materials. Through a bibliographical review, it was possible to identify that there is a vast production of teacher education and teaching materials in the areas of Sociolinguistics and teaching of Portuguese as Mother Language, but that there is still room for the production of similar materials when it comes to PAL. It is argued, therefore, that there is a need for the development of more in-depth studies regarding teacher education and the preparation of PAL teaching materials based on VS studies.
