Abstract

Non-shared environmental influences are non-genetic influences that are uncorrelated in family members. Monozygotic twins have the same genes and shared environment. Any differences in the behaviour of monozygotic twins can be attributed to non-shared environmental influences. Qualitative methods can help study in depth the non-shared environmental influences causing discordance among monozygotic twins. I conducted a literature review, as part of my KURF Project, evaluating how qualitative methods can be utilised to study non-shared environmental influences causing discordance among monozygotic twins. This essay summarises and reflects on the journey of taking on a research project, the challenges of working in an independent environment and the skills acquired by the end of the project.
