He participated in the development of Nutrition and Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 1980. The Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health in 1988 and Diet and Health: Implications for Reducing Chronic Disease Risk (1984). He is a member of the American Institute of Nutrition and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and is an honorary member of the American Dietetic Association. He has served in many capacities as a nutrition advisor to government, industry, and voluntary organizations. His major research and clinical interests have been in the area of human obesity and in the problems of health fraud.
