Abstract

ABSTRACTThis essay reflects on the International symposium titled “Trans-Pacific Japanese Diaspora Art: Encountering and Envisioning Minor-Transnationalism,” held in Tokyo in December 2018. Drawing on Francoise Lionnet and Shu-mei Shih’s notion of “minor transnationalism,” I discuss new perspectives on contemporary art in Japan. More specifically, I comment on the work of Zainichi Korean artist, Soni Kum and Okinawan artist, Yamashiro Chikako.
