Abstract

ABSTRACT A critical strand of educational research examines how people, and youth in particular, make adaptations to overcome unexpected and non-routine problems. In this conceptual paper, the authors propose an expanded framework that reenvisions adaptive expertise as a distributed phenomenon, focusing on three interrelated aspects relevant to how people work toward adaptations: (1) recruitment and coordination of resources, (2) reframing of problems and goals, and (3) navigational foresight. The paper illustrates the framework through examples drawn from a study of youth participation in the maker movement.
