Abstract
This essay analyses Red Riding Hood—The Haredic Version!, which appeared on Torath Haim b'Oz, an Israeli nationalist-religious website associated with the Ariel youth movement. The deeply stratified and diverse culture of contemporary Israeli society can be seen through the careful consideration of the online version of Red Riding Hood, the website in which it appeared, and the comments posted by participants in the discussion forum. After exploring the larger political and religious context in which the online version appeared, this essay examines how young members of the Ariel movement use the online forum and the Red Riding Hood text to interpret their role as political activists and observant Jews in contemporary Israeli society, as well as to consider how normative expectations related to sex and gender fit their own personal beliefs.
