Abstract
This study evaluates antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of the marine red algae Bornetia secundiflora collected from the Atlantic coast of Sidi Bouzid El Jadida-Morocco. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were tested in methanol, chloroform, acetone, hexane and water extracts against Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis , Bacillus thuringinsis , Bacillus cereus and against fungi Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis . The best antibacterial activity was obtained in methanolic extract and S. aureus was the more sensitive, while, a weak antifungal activity was observed. Concerning the cytotoxic activity, dichloromethane/methanol (50:50) extract of Bornetia secundiflora was evaluated using test of brine shrimp lethality for larvae then tested on KB, HeLa and k562 cells lines. The highest cytotoxic activity was found against KB cell lines.
