Abstract

We demonstrate the one-step thermal fusion and infusion of pyrene molecules inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Despite the presence of metallic-SWCNTs, which behave as a quencher due to gapless electronic states, the nanohybrids consisting of pyrene and/or azupyrene oligomers infused SWCNT sheets exhibit red fluorescence by the ultraviolet, blue, and green light excitations. The wavelength-independent light-emitting behavior is explained by (1) infused PAH oligomers inside semiconducting-SWCNTs and (2) the peculiar Ͽ⿿Ͽ interaction through mixed Ͽ-conjugated state between the Ͽ-conjugated oligomers and non-armchair metallic-SWCNTs.
