Abstract

Key Points Recurrent infections from immunodeficiency are much less common than the normal pattern of frequent infections in early childhood.Immunodeficiency secondary to nonimmunologic causes (eg, cancer, malnutrition, medication/toxin) is more common than primary immunodeficiency.Common allergic conditions can be confused for recurrent infections: allergic rhinitis for upper respiratory tract infections and asthma for pneumonias.Children thought to be immunodeficient should not receive live attenuated vaccines (measles-mumps-rubella, rotavirus, varicella, oral poliovirus).Prompt diagnosis and treatment of children with immunodeficiency can be lifesaving.
