Abstract
Corona discharge is a common phenomenon in power systems. If it occurs in overhead lines, then hidden dangers, such as poor contact between metal fittings of insulators and transmission lines, aging insulators, and strand breakage of lines, exist. These dangers may lead to further serious accidents. So, faults must be detected and removed in time. In this study, a novel miniaturized antenna is designed to detect electromagnetic waves produced by corona discharge in overhead lines. This antenna is called a rectangular spiral antenna with a Hilbert unit. The main structure of this antenna is the rectangular spiral curve, whereas the partial structure is the Hilbert fractal curve. The designed antenna is airborne and can be mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle for close-range detection. The final size of this antenna is 100 mm × 100 m × 1.6 mm, and the weight is 35g. Finally, the performance of the designed antenna is verified using an experiment platform of corona discharge.
