Abstract
A 67-year-old man was referred because of abdominal discomfort of 9 months' duration. There was no significant medical or surgical history. Digital rectal examination revealed a slightly firm mass. At colonoscopy, there was a yellowish submucosal tumor with normal overlying mucosa in the rectum at 5 cm from the anal verge (A). Catheter US probe EUS revealed a hypoechoic round mass confined to the submucosa (B). EMR was performed for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The gross specimen included a whitish small nodule covered by normal mucosa (C). Microscopic evaluat ion demonstrated a proliferation of uniform cells with scanty, pink granular cytoplasm and round to oval, stippled nuclei (D; H&E, orig. mag. x400). A histopathologic diagnosis of rectal carcinoid tumor was made. Since EMR, the patient has been asymptomatic.
