Abstract

Abstract Modified waterflooding was tried to enhance the recovery of a medium-heavy crude oil of the North Gujarat oil field, India. Under reservoir conditions, the viscosity of oil varies from 10 to 18 cp, and the acid number varies from 2.6 to 3.0. The primary recovery is about 18 percent. The recovery at breakthrough with water injection was found to be 21.9 percent, with 38.4 percent ultimate recovery. Using 10 percent PV slug of polymer (Pusher-700), the breakthrough recovery was 22 percent, whereas the ultimate recovery increased to 46.7 percent. The injection of programmed slug of Pusher-700 gave a breakthrough recovery of 22.6 percent and an ultimate recovery of 48 percent. Experiments were also conducted using dilute solutions of caustic soda of various concentrations to displace oil. Concentration of 0.25 percent by weight of caustic soda was found to give the best results. Using continuous injection of a caustic solution of 0.25 percent concentration, a breakthrough recovery of 32.6 percent and...
