Abstract The rationales for overlooking the black social gospel are unpersuasive. The early black social gospel numbered more than a handful of ministers, it produced important public intellectuals, and it already had four schools of thought—accommodationist, nationalist, radical, and reformist—before W.E.B. Du Bois emerged as the leader of the new abolition movement. Du Bois became the leading influence on the faction of the black social gospel that led to King.
