Abstract

Blarina brevicauda carolinensis (Bachman). Short-tailed Shrew.Increased knowledge of the geographic distribution of this subspecies in the Great Plains (Jones and Findley, 1954) has made obvious the possibility that it occurs in Iowa as well as Nebraska. Two specimens from 4 mi. S and 9 mi. W of Sidney and seven specimens from 5 mi. S and 2 mi. W of Sidney, Fremont County, are here referred to B. b. carolinensis on the basis of their small size. Average and extreme external measurements of the nine sepcimens are: Total length, 107.7 (101-118); length of tail vertebrae, 22.8 (19-26); length of hind foot, 13.8 (13-15). The only short-tailed shrew previously reported from Iowa is B. b. brevicauda. Scott (1937) records no specimens of this species from the southwestern part of the state.
