Abstract

Summary.X‐ray absorption by the lungs has been recorded, by means of the electrokymograph constructed by ENGSTRÖM, KJELLBEEG, PERSSON and EUDHE, while altering the blood contents of the legs. It has been possible by this to record an increase in the amount of blood occurring in different parts of the lungs in direct connection with a sudden decrease of the blood in a part of the systemic circuit. By analogous recording of the electrokymo‐gram of the left ventricle, it has been possible to demonstrate directly the relationship between the pulmonary blood contents, and the volume and rate of filling of the left ventricle. The described observations provide further support for the hypothesis that the lungs function as a blood depot which regulates the volume, rate of filling, and stroke volume of the left ventricle.
