Abstract

We have developed a novel writable compact disc (CD) using a Au70Sn30 alloy recording film. This has the advantages of a single-layered, simple structure suitable for conventional CD processes, high reflectivity, low toxicity and high reliability. Recording marks are formed by filling up the grooves resulting from thermal deformation and deconstruction of polycarbonate resin. Modulation amplitudes of 0.37 (3 T) and 0.87 (11 T) are obtained by this new recording method. The addition of Ti to the recording film improves its reliability by preventing Sn oxidization.
