Abstract

This article moves beyond simple issues of act structures and storytelling, laying the foundation for a ‘Creative Matrix’ through which to present a broader basis for understanding and creative development in the making of any work for the screen. The aims of the Matrix are to provide an understanding of how a screenwork ‘works’, in a creative sense; secondly, to provide a framework of creative questions that may be used in developing a screenwork in different forms. This requires a ‘redefinition’ of narrative, centred on a complex web involving six key narrative elements—story, theme, form, plot, genre and style—which are referenced in screenworks in all forms, and are fundamental to solving problems in the creation of the screenplay.
