Abstract

It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900–1970 serves as an expository reflection on the history of Black dance and performance in Canada. As a scholar, writer, educator, and professional modern and postmodern dance artist, Seika Boye features the Black archive as a central component for understanding the experiences of Black populations in Canada. The exhibition rejects assumptions about Black invisibility and instead offers a way to view Black presence in plain sight. As such, It’s About Time brilliantly features the Black archive through images, artifacts, and public viewings of Black dancers across Canada to highlight the multiplicity of their experiences and contributions to the nation.
