Abstract

The border between French Indochina and Siam was defined by a treaty signed between the Asian kingdom and France in 1907. Through this treaty, France gave up its right to extraterritorial protection on its Asian nationals, while Siam surrendered to Cambodia, a French protectorate, the three provinces in the Angkor region. The real French actor of the negotiation was Lieutenant Colonel Fernand Bernard. He managed to finally settle the thorny territorial issue thanks to his precise understanding of the Siamese interest and his close relationship with the "Parti colonial" as well as some influential political figures.
