Abstract

We propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance the in-door wireless communication. The proposed RIS loaded with microwave diodes is controlled by a field programmable gate array (FPGA), which can dynamically steer the reflective waves to optimize the signal propagation in a complex electromagnetic environment. A RIS prototype is designed and fabricated, which consists of 576 2-bit elements and has a total size of 800 mm×820 mm. The measured results show that the RIS can improve the received signal power at desired regions by controlling the FPGA to encode RIS with different coding sequences. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the wireless communication quality could be enhanced with the RIS by successfully transforming graph information comparing with the case without RIS or with a bare metallic reflector. The proposed RIS may have great potential in the next-generation wireless communication applications.
