Abstract

ABSTRACTReconfigurability of the radiation characteristic is one of the recent significant developments associated with the characterization of microstrip patch antennas for wireless communication systems. This paper presents, in an exhaustive and comprehensive form, the recent results for various novel reconfigurable microstrip antenna topologies involving corner truncations and ring slot loading, coupled with PIN diode switching mechanism. These designs exhibit the functions of polarization reconfiguration, polarization, and frequency reconfiguration with an attractive single layer patch and easily realizable practical structure. Emphasis is placed on design, simulation, and experimental results of each of the proposed geometries illustrating the antenna versatility in several applications.
