Abstract
The past few years have included some of the fastest product and technology changes in the history of dentistry, and the public’s opinions about oral treatment also have changed. In this column, I will discuss the numerous factors that have influenced those changes. The result of the economic changes has caused many patients to delay treatment because of lack of funds, accept provisional treatment because they cannot afford or are not willing to spend the money to have definitive treatment, and accept new, less expensive treatment that is relatively unproven just because it appears to satisfy their esthetic desires better.
