Abstract

Artists may be interested in more information about their materials and methods since many art schools do not focus on educating students about choosing sound materials. Traditionally, instruction in methods and materials for painting evolved through guilds and workshops; knowledge of materials and techniques was passed from master to apprentice. The complexity of current art materials has further complicated the situation for artists as they shop for supplies. Art conservators, preventive conservators, materials scientists, and art materials experts can play an important role in advising art instructors and guiding artists to choose more stable materials and methods. Gottsegen's untimely passing and the dissolution of Art Materials Information and Education Network were a loss to the art community. The Materials Information and Technical Resources for Artists international website and forum serve as a guide for artists who are interested in learning about 'best practices' as well as up-to-date scientific research on contemporary art materials and art techniques.
