Abstract
Recombinant congenic (RC) strains are sets of homozygous strains with two inbred parents. Each RC strain contains a unique mixture of 87.5% genes from the „background“ parent and 12.5% from the „donor“ parent. This separates donor strain genes into multiple compartments and improves mapping efficiency. F2 hybrids or backcrosses between an RC strain and its background strain contain only a limited set of segregating genes. Therefore they have a high statistical power to map QTLs, detect mutual gene–gene interactions, and study functions of individual genes. They can be used in study of cancer, imunology, and other fields.
