Abstract

Professor William Appleton’s edited version of the hitherto unpublished Recollections of the 19th century English actor, O. Smith, (1786-1855) is a rich resource for contemporary research into early 19th century theatre. The vitalism of the melodrama, burlesque and pantomime of this period, which provided eminently satisfying theatre, has been frequently overlooked. It is only in recent years that scholars in this field, most pre-eminently Canadian Michael Booth, have done much to re-evaluate for us an area of theatre which, largely because of neglect and misunderstanding, has commonly been pejoratively viewed. The Theatre Library Association through the medium of its annual publication, Performing Arts Resources, is to be congratulated on making available to us, in a volume designated for this specific purpose, the memoirs of a celebrated villain of the stage, the Boris Karloff of the 19th century.
